🍞 Save 15 Days A Year With One Small Trick
Get up on the first alarm every time, learn to enjoy the climb, & train your brain like a dumb dog
This is Bread Crumbs - the carb-loving newsletter that feeds you knowledge bread sticks.
Today’s estimated read time: 3 minutes & 39 seconds.
This is written by a guy who wants to live off just a backpack for 3+ months. His friends call him Luke.
One Tiny Habit
Less than 5 minutes a day can change your life.
Story time! I suck at getting out of bed. If I don’t have any commitments, I can easily spend the first 30-60 minutes scrolling on my phone.
When I finally get up, I feel like a bum. That bed is so damn comfortable & my phone has a gravitational pull.
But a few years ago, I figured out how to get up every day on the first alarm! All with no extra work!! I now feel more energetic and clear-headed in the morning, which usually leads to a great afternoon.
What did I do?
I put my phone (aka my alarm) a short walking distance from my bed.
By getting up right away, I save 30-60 minutes a day. That’s 7-15 days every year!!
Let’s be honest though, new habits are really fucking hard to build and keep. So let’s make it easier to put your phone away:
Reward Yourself - after putting your phone away for the night, eat a dessert.
Replace Your Phone - use another device or book for in-bed entertainment
Sometimes I end up back in bed. That’s okay & normal! But over time, this habit has compounded and made me a more productive, energetic, & happy person.
One Insightful Question
Stop unconsciously floating through life & start thinking about things that really matter.
I like to stay busy. On the flipside, I stress that I am not getting enough done & fail to appreciate all of the cool stuff I am doing. Obviously I don’t like feeling stressed and lacking in appreciation. After years of searching, I finally found a solution! Every day I answer the question:
“What did I do yesterday?”
It’s so simple it sounds stupid to say. BUT IT FUCKING WORKS. It alleviates stress. And it forces me to take a step back and enjoy the climb.
I’ve also noticed some unexpected benefits! I can easily recognize patterns over time & see what actions make me happy or stressed. And since I write down my answers, I can look back in 20 years and literally see what actions led to the person I became. I can show my kids that stuff! That alone makes it worth it.
To start, you don’t have to do it all of the time. Taking 5 minutes to answer this question can be a good reset for the day. Give it a try right now! I bet you’ve done more than you think :)
One Guiding Principle
Use principles to guide you towards a better life.
You are no different than the people you admire. But, you aren’t the same. They have achieved something great that you wish you could do. So, what’s the missing piece?? There’s got to be a reason you aren’t in the same place.
Most people think it’s because they aren’t disciplined enough or “don’t have it in them”. Wrong!
You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.
Everyone’s brain is like a dumb dog. Whether you like it or not, you are always training it.
If you train it to do good stuff (like workout & learn), you will grow into a fit intellectual. If you train it to do bad stuff (like scroll on social media), you will become a self conscious person who finds it hard to focus.
Okay, so how do you train your brain?
Make it easy to do good stuff (ex: buy a tasty smoothie after going to the gym).
Make it hard to do bad stuff (ex: only use the browser version of Instagram).
“good stuff” takes a step towards your goals
“bad stuff” takes you away from your goals.
You CAN grow into the person you’ve always wanted to be. You just need systems to lead your stupid animal brain there.
